Melia Yin was a third generation British-Chinese woman. Despite having been born and raised in Britian, her parents always taught her the importance of marrying in one's culture--pure in wizarding blood and in Chinese descent. Their pureblood views, however, weren't the same views as the ones that caused the wizarding wars, culture was just extremely important to the yin family and blood was part of that--how would Melia's husband understand her at all if he didn't have these in common with her?
In Hogwarts, she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She stuck by her books for the most part, not wanting to tempt herself with people her parents would never approve of, because family was important as well. She had no Chinese classmates, so she couldn't simply date one of those and be done with it.
When she finished Hogwarts, she went to China to find her husband, and she did. She met pureblood Chinese wizard, Tai Chang and brought him to England for her parents approval to marry. Melia and Tai didn't love each other, at first, but they could live with each other. Once the approval was granted, the wedding preparations began, there was no chance of backing out.
Over time, Melia and Tai did learn to love one another, this improved by the birth of their first and only baby girl who they named Cho. They were finally a real family and that changed a lot of things in their marriage, good and bad, but mostly good.
Cho grew up being taught the same principles as her mother, but it wasn't as easy as that. The first couple of years, she was okay with it. Boys didn't really catch her eye. She focused on her studies, as any good Ravenclaw should, but as she started to get older, she found that she was actually attracted to some of her classmates. It wouldn't hurt to date them would it? She was too young to worry about who she was going to marry, anyway.
In her fourth year, she tried out for the vacant seeker position on the Ravenclaw quidditch team and made it. That served as another distraction from the boys around her, to some extent. It was through quidditch that she noticed both Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter. She'd heard about the latter before, of course. After all, he'd been famous his entire life. She'd never
noticed him, though. How attractive he really was.
By her fifth year, she was coping with having crushes on two boys she couldn't let herself date, but that was the year of the Yule Ball. Temptation to have a date was too high. She found herself really hoping that Harry would ask her, but he enver did. Instead, Cedric did. He was handsome and a quidditch captain and even a tri-wizard champion, so she couldn't help but say yes. After the ball, the two began dating seriously throughout the rest of the year, before it ended in tragedy.
Cedric's death had taken quite the toll on Cho, but it was a little deeper than losing someone she had realized she loved. She had a fear that his death had been ultimately caused by her, for going against her parents wishes, she lost the boy she loved. She knew it was irrational. She knew why Cedric really died, but she couldn't help but wonder had they not dated if he wouldn't have died.
She could be found crying a lot after that, well into her sixth year. Everytime someone mentioned Cedric or even around Harry, she would cry--because Harry was the last person to see him alive. Yet she also found herself even more drawn to Harry because of that. A part of her wanted to know what happened, but she was too scared of knowing. She joined Dumbledore's Army, alog with her best friend, Marietta, to get closer to him. Her crush only got stronger as time went on.
After their first kiss near Christmas time, Cho and Harry developed a rocky and awkward relationship. They didn't go on their first date until Valentine's Day, when they were in Hogsmeade but it was an awkward experience where she expressed jealousy over his friendship with Hermione Granger. After that, things got worse between them, though that was only really the beginning of their end.
When Marietta exposed the DA, Cho's loyalty to her best friend took over and she defended Marietta to Harry, which Harry hadn't liked. His feelings for her cooled off considerably after that and what remained of their relationship died. To show that she was unphased by the breakup, Cho dated Michael Corner, though at times she found herself wishing that she had been able to work things out with Harry, she knew it would never work.
Upon finishing school, Cho began working in a small wizarding bookshop, while trying to gain a tryout for the Tornados, her favorite team since childhood. She worked there through the end of the war and finally got on the team, as their seeker, once the quidditch league reopened.
She also returned to Hogwarts to fight in the final battle.
Personality: Write up a summary, no less than two sizable paragraphs, about your character's personality. Try not to fall victim to stereotypes. Include things that make them angry or happy, things that they like to do in their spare time. You can write how they would react to certain situations, who their friends are and what kinds of people they have crushes on. Include interests and hobbies, academics, etc. Include one thing that makes them unique.
Many people remember Cho as being highly emotional and needy. She was at that, but if people really stopped to consider the things she'd gone through, perhaps they would understand. She'd always been a girl who wore her heart on her sleeve and perhaps that got the better of her in tough times. Still, she has a good heart and generally has the best of intentions in any given situation.
When she dated Harry, it was very possible that it was out of selfish intent, but she hadn't meant for it to be. She'd really liked him before she started dating Cedric, but after her loss, all she could think about was finding out what really happened. It came at the cost of a friend in a boy she could have really fallen for had things been different.
When she defended Marietta, it had been loyalty to a friend who had been there Cho's entire life. A lot of people disliked her after that, but she had really had the best intent in mind. Wasn't a person supposed to stand by their best friend no matter what?
Since finishing school, Cho has grown up considerably. She still wears her heart on her sleeve, but she's been able to cope with and accept Cedric's death as it is without any further need for information. She's been able to move on with her life and get past everything that school had done to her.
She's cheerful again, not nearly as needy as she used to be and still extremely loyal to her friends. She feels like she's met a lot of obstacles that she thought she could never get over but she did and she's a stronger person because of it.
Where is s/he headed?: What are your character's current goals and dreams? Do you have any special plot ideas?
Cho wants to apologize for the way she acted in school, mainly to Harry and Hermione and she hopes that she and Harry can form a genuine friendship that doesn't include lies and selfish motive.
Sample Journal Entry: This is just to see if you have a feel for your specific character. Write their first entry or a random entry throughout the year. It does not have to be a novel.
The Tornados have a game today, I think I'm ready for it, but I never really know until I get out there and actually start playing. As with any game, I have all of this energy and excitement, but no way to let it out as I don't want to waste all of my energy before the game.
I almost sent an owl to Harry the other day, but I couldn't bring myself to actually do it. I actually had it written and started to tie it to Cilla's leg, but I ended up throwing it away. An owl isn't the right way to begin an apology. I just don't know how I'd do it in person.
Sample RP Scenario: Come up with something that lets us see how your character acts. Two paragraphs, minimum. You CAN show up a log from a previous character.
Cho had finally sent Harry the owl she'd been trying to send him for months, but it wasn't the apology. He deserved that in person, which made her very nervous. It had simply asked him to meet her. She hadn't been sure he'd even respond, but he'd said he'd be there. Whether or not he had second thoughts after, she couldn't be sure. The least she could do, however, was wait and hope he actually decided to show up.
She'd never been good with apologies, she'd apologize to her parents when he angered them, but to her own peers it was more difficult. Her parents had to forgive her. Harry didn't. She found herself pacing back and forth as she waited, the more time that passed, the more she was sure he wasn't going to be there.
Time was passing, however, slower than it seemed. What seemed to have been ten minutes was only a couple of minutes. He wasn't even late yet.
Breathe, Cho, breathe, she told herself and forced her body to stop pacing.
She looked up and Harry was walking toward her. He didn't look overly friendly, but could she blame him? She gave him a nervous smile and waited until he stopped walking. "Hey, Harry, it's been a while," she said softly as he did. She'd have to ease into the 'I'm sorry' as she didn't really even know how to begin it.
